The water tanker was stolen from Furphy Park in Shepparton, which is named after engineering blacksmith John Furphy who produced thousands of the water tankers.

"Tanks for nothing," local police posted to Facebook on Wednesday.

The Furphy and Sons tanker allowed several hundred litres of water to be transported by horse between towns and later the front lines during World War I.

Furphy became synonymous with unreliable tales when Australian soldiers gathered around the water tankers to share stories that were often ludicrous.

Greater Shepparton City Council infrastructure director Steve Bowmaker said the theft would have taken several strong people.

"This is not a small or light object," he said in a statement.

"The ends and the tank lid are all made of cast iron with a rolled galvanised barrel.

"This really is a low act, it was a popular fixture at the park and reminded people of our local history."
